DIY is a popular acronym that means to Do It Yourself. The main aim of DIY is to do something useful and productive, or in our case: something you can do yourself instead of hiring a skilled professional. However, there’s a wide range of options when it comes to picking a DIY project. Everything from building a treehouse to changing a tyre could fall under the DIY heading. The trick is to choose one that matters to you.

DIY sounds fun when you say it. But actually running a project requires some creative thinking and maximum effort. There are 3 steps involved; thinking about the problem, choosing the project, and accomplishing said project.

Thinking DIY

Recognize the purpose of something that you DIY. Aside from DIY being a great way to spend your extra time, it is also a chance to produce something useful or helpful. Consider what projects you have in your life that need to be accomplished, and then assess if you might be able to do it on your own. Not everything requires a professional touch, plus DIY can be a lot of fun if you do it right.

Look around for things you can improve on and write them down. Start paying attention to the things you need done around your house and you’ll find a ton of inspiration for DIY projects. Be sure to write them so you can execute them systemically.

Adopt the DIY attitude, Never back down. Willing to DIY is an indication that you’re on the right path. However, you have to understand that your projects might not come out perfectly - especially if you are a beginner. You’ll gain serious satisfaction after completing your first DIY project. As you get better your final outcome will look better too. Your first few projects are learning experiences, not failures.

Choosing your DIY Project

Choose a project within your skill set. Recognize your skills, abilities, and importantly your limitations. If you already have some carpentry skills then maybe it isn’t so crazy to try to build your own coffee table. However, if you’ve never used a power tool before you might want to start with something more simple. Don’t put yourself in danger.

Decide your timeframe. Choose a project that fits with your timeframe so that you don’t end up with a half finished project that never gets done. A lot of projects will have designated timeframes but this also depends on your skill level. Be prepared to be flexible.

Pick a project you need to do. Painting the house seems fun, but not if your table is getting creaky. There are always going to be fun projects to do.

Accomplishing your DIY project

Find the right tools. The most common tools for DIY projects are glue guns, power tools, hammer, wrench, scissors, Sharpies, cutters, pen and stationery. Ultimately the tools you’ll need depend on the type of project you do. You can buy smaller tools and rent bigger tools.

Gather your materials in one place. DIY can make a mess, so it’s always a good idea to have your materials available before you start the project. Make a list of the materials that you need and gather them all before you begin.

Look for instructions. There’s no shame in looking up how to do something if you’re lost or a newbie. It’s just a matter of taking advantage of the resources that are available to you. A website you can always go to for detailed instructions is Wikihow
